The SAP Return-to-Duty Process
Initial SAP Evaluation
A comprehensive face-to-face clinical assessment to evaluate the nature and extent of the substance use issue and determine the appropriate education or treatment recommendation.
Education or Treatment
Completion of the SAP-recommended program — which may include substance abuse education, outpatient counseling, or a formal treatment program.
Follow-Up SAP Evaluation
After completing the recommended program, a second evaluation confirms compliance and determines whether you are ready to return to safety-sensitive duties.
Return-to-Duty Testing
Your employer arranges a directly observed return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test. A negative result allows you to resume safety-sensitive functions.
Follow-Up Testing Plan
The SAP prescribes an unannounced follow-up testing schedule (minimum 6 tests in the first 12 months) to monitor continued compliance.
